The Cool Factor: How Many Pairs of Sunglasses Do You Need?

If you think the only purpose for wearing sunglasses is to protect your eyes against sunlight, you really need to rethink your assumptions. The fact is that a lot of people wear sunglasses for no other reason than they like what a good pair of shades does for their look. Sunglasses are cool. It is that simple. The question is: how many pairs do you need to maximize the cool factor?

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to consider yourself the king of cool if you have only one pair of sunglasses to go with every outfit in your closet. Likewise, you are bordering on ostentatious if you have so many pairs that you cannot count them all in a reasonable amount of time. Elton John’s collection is absolutely impressive on so many levels. But it left cool behind years ago.

So, how many pairs do you need? Let us explore that a little bit further.

Is Two Too Few?

Olympic Eyewear, a Utah company that specializes in designer and fashion sunglasses at wholesale prices, says that the average American adult owns at least two pairs of sunglasses. One is generally kept in the car while a second pair could have multiple applications. That being the case, it’s probably safe to say that two pairs is too few to be cool.

If it only took two to be cool, then being cool would instantly lose any appeal. In other words, it is not cool if everyone else is doing it. So that means we need to jump to at least three or more. If you only have two pairs of sunglasses to your name, it is time to step up your game or be left behind.

Is Three a Crowd?

Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘two is company but three’s a crowd’? It’s an old phrase we use to describe the scenario of being made uncomfortable when a third person joins two other people who are previously enjoying one another’s company to the exclusion of everyone else.

Any such feelings about owning three pairs of sunglasses would automatically relegate you to getting rid of a pair so that you are once again down to two. What can we conclude from this? That you are probably hurting in the cool department if owning three pairs of sunglasses makes you uncomfortable.

Can you be cool with just three pairs? Yes you can. Three pairs is a good place to start if you don’t have an extensive enough wardrobe to support any more than that. But hey, there’s always room to expand your wardrobe, right?

How About Four or More?

Purchase a fourth pair of sunglasses and now you’re on to something. That fourth pair says you pay attention to fashion and good looks rather than eye protection alone. After all, you could get away with two pairs if keeping out direct sunlight and UV rays were your only concern.

Four pairs say you really care about the way you look. You own one utilitarian pair you keep in the car and three more that you match to whatever outfit you’re wearing. Of course, at least two pairs will probably be neutral colors. But you could think bright and bold for the third and fourth pairs.

You might consider five pairs if you want a pair for each season plus a spare to keep in the car. But five is about the limit. Once you start thinking about six pairs or more, you are entering Elton John wannabee territory. Think long and hard before you go down that road.
